According to his obituary, "He helped organize the West High School swimming team in 1923. Working in the Summers at the old Crystal Pool at Summit Beach and in the Winters at the YMCA, he developed a long list of State and National swimming champions, particularly in the long distance events which were his forte. Once to prove how easy a swimmer could propel himself through the water, he towed a rowboat from Hohman's Landing to Sandy Beach, a mile-long stretch of East Reservoir - with hands tied behind his back and legs tied together. His YMCA senior swimming team won an unprecedented five straight state titles in the 1930s and three of his pupils won 28 medals in marathon events." |
