Richard I, King of England, the son of Henry II, King of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, Dutchess of Aquitaine. He was born on 8 September 1157 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. A contract for the marriage of Richard and Alice Princess of France was signed in 1169. He became Duke of Aquitane in 1170. In 1173, he joined with his brothers in a revolt against his father, which ended the next year. He then set about establishing his authority in the Aquitaine. In 1177, King Louis demanded that he marry the Princess Alice, and the matter was submitted to arbitration. With his brother, Henry’s, death in 1183, he became the heir to the throne of England. Henry II called him to give Aquitaine to his brother John. This lead to another war, which Henry II won. In 1187, King Phillip Augustus lead an army into Barry and besieged John and Richard at Châteauroux. The nobles intervened and prevented an all out battle. He was crowned King of England in 3 September 1189 at Westminster Abbey, London, England. On 11 December 1189, Richard left England on the Third Crusade. While he helped defeat the Moslems at the Battle of Arsuf, they were not strong enough to win Jerusalem. He made peace with Saladin and was allowed to visit Jerusalem. In March 1190, Richard I voided his marriage contract with Alice of France. [Richard, at age 33, married Berengara of Navarre] On his return from the Crusade, he was imprisoned by the Duke of Austria. In 1194, upon the payment of a large ransom, he was released. He arrived back in England 13 March 1194. He died 2 April 1199 having been wounded by an crossbow bolt at the siege of Châlus in Limousin. He was buried in Fontevrault Abbey, Fontevrault, Maine-et-Loire, France. |
