- He was also the Steward of England and Normandy.
- In 1168, he succeeded his father as the third Earl of Leicester. [1, 4]
- When Henry, son of Henry II revolted in 1173, Sir Robert joined him. The revolt was crushed, and Robert and his wife were made prisoners of the crown. While he was later restored, his main castle at Leicester was destroyed. [4]
- At the coronation of Richard I on 3 September 1189, Sir Robert carried the Swords of State. [4]
