Margaret O'Toole, the daughter of John Francis and Ellen (Madden) O'Toole. She was born in 1894 in Pennsylvania and died October 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from complications from child birth. Margaret graduated from Duquesne University, and before her marriage, taught at the Luckey School in the West End of Pittsburgh. According to Rose Scully, "Peg was calm, easy-going, generous, quick to laughter. she was wonderful with Eileen..... She was good with her hands, could sew and make things for the baby to play with. For many years, the ornaments she made for Eileen's first Christmas decorated our trees."

According to Rose Scully, after Peg's death "He brought the children home [his mother's home] and taught Eileen to call my mother [Nancy Scobie Scully] "Mom". It was nice for us to have him and the two little ones, but having had for three brief years his own home, even if it was just a few rooms, he wasn't satisfied here. He did his best to make things pleasant for everybody else. He had a quick wit, and even on the most serious occasions he could say something exquisitely funny. There was never anything phony about Jack; he was a real gentleman." [6] |
