Grace Helena Rothermel was born on 23 July 1887 at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4 She was the daughter of William Irvin Rothermel and Mary Lizzie Welch. Grace, age 12, appeared on the US Census of 1900 living at McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of her parents, William Irvin and Mary Lizzie Rothermel.1 Grace Helena Rothermel and William Woods Oakes obtained a marriage license on 18 June 1906 at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.5
Grace Helena Rothermel, age 18, married William Woods Oakes, age 22 , son of James Bruce Oakes and Rachel Anne Beard, on 22 June 1906 at the McEwensville, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
Her married name was Oakes. Grace, age 22 years, and William Oakes, age 26 years, appeared on the US Census of 1910 at White Deer Township, Union County, Pennsylvania.6 Grace, age 42 years, and William Oakes, age 46 years, appeared on the US Census of 1930 on State Highway, Shamokin Dam, Snyder County, Pennsylvania.7 Grace, age 52 years, appeared on the US Census of 1940 at 2565 Norris Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her sister Mary and her family.8 She died on 29 June 1955 at St. Mary's Hospital, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, at age 67 from a coronary infarction.2,3 Grace's obituary of 30 June 1955, reads:
Mrs. Grace H. Oakes, 67, of 2563 East Norris street, Philadelphia, a former resident of Sunbury and Shamokin 'Dam, died in St. Mary's Hospital, Philadelphia, Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock. She been a patient four weeks, death followed an operation.
Widow of Woods Oakes, who preceded her in death 24 years ago, she was born 67. years in McEwensville, the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth Welsh Rothermel. The couple resided at 724. Susquehanna avenue from 1904 until 1912 when they moved to Shamokin Dam, where they lived until his death in 1931. Mrs. Oakes then moved to Philadelphia, where she resided with her sister, Mrs. Dr. John Sabol until death.
In addition to her sister, she is survived by daughter, Mildred, wife of William C. Anderson, 318 Water street, Northumberland, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held from the Reformed Church, McEwensville, Saturday morning at 11 o'clock with Rev. Bart S. Crites, pastor of the Methodist Church, Northumberland, officiating. Burial will be in McEwensville cemetery. Friends will be received at the Dornsife Funeral Home, this city, Friday evening between 7 and 9 o'clock.
