     Edis Matthew was born circa 1852 at Canada.1 He was the son of James Matthew and Amelia Gates. Edis appeared on the US Census of 1870 living at Montpelier, Vermont,in the household of his parents, James and Amelia Matthew.1 According to the Federal Census in 1870, Edis was a day laborer.1
