     Emerson Hill was born in 1829 at Barre, Vermont. He was the son of Ebenezer Hill and Ruth Wheeler.

Emerson Hill, 31 years, appeared as Head of Household with Julia, his wife, on the United States Census of 1860 at Berlin, Vermont.1 According to the Federal Census in 1860, Emerson was a farmer.1 He died on 7 July 1898 at Berlin, Vermont, from cancer of the stomach. He was buried at West Berlin Cemetery, West Berlin, Vermont. Emerson's epitaph reads:
