     Gilbert Townsend Travis was born on 27 July 1825 at New York City, New York.1,2 He was the son of Joseph Travis and Abigail Tompkins. Gilbert, age 24 years, appeared on the US Census of 1850 at New York City, New York. He worked in retail trade.3

Gilbert Townsend Travis, age 26, married Abby Jane Rogers, age 19 , daughter of Samuel Henry Rogers and Jane Kingsland, on 16 December 1851 at New York City, New York.

Gilbert registered for the draft giving his age as 40, and his occupation as a merchant in 1863 at Brooklyn, New York.6 Gilbert, age 39 years, and Abby, age 32 years , appeared on the New York State Census of 1865 at Brooklyn, New York.7 Gilbert, age 49 years, and Abby, age 42 years , appeared on the New York State Census of 1875 at Brooklyn, New York.8 Gilbert, age 54 years, and Abby, age 47 years, appeared on the US Census of 1880 on 60 St. Johns Place, Brooklyn, New York. According to the Federal Census in 1880, Gilbert was a retired merchant.9 Gilbert, age 74 years, appeared on the US Census of 1900 at 296 Main Street, Stamford, Connecticut, with his daughter, Jennie, and her family. His wife was not listed.2 He died on 16 July 1902 at Stamford, Connecticut, at age 76.10
