According to the Federal Census in 1880, Gilbert was a retired merchant.⁹ Gilbert, age 74 years, appeared on the US Census of 1900 at 296 Main Street, Stamford, Connecticut, with his daughter, Jennie, and her family. His wife was not listed.² He died on 16 July 1902 at Stamford, Connecticut, at age 76.¹⁰
