Elijah Horton

     Elijah Horton was born on 26 April 1810 at Yorktown, Westchester County, New York.^1,2,3 He was the son of William Horton and Ruhama Buckbee.¹

Elijah Horton, age 21, married Elizabeth Ann Travis, age 21 , daughter of John Travis and Phebe Whitney, on 29 November 1831 at Yorktown, Westchester County, New York, They were married by the Rev. John Sloat, the Methodist Minister.



In 1833,Elijah and Betsymoved to Carmel, Putnam County, New York.² Elijah, appeared on the US Census of 1840 at Phillipstown, Putnam County, New York. The enumeration reads:



Elijah and Betsey moved in 1845 to Putnam Valley, New York. Elijah, age 39 years, and Betsy Travis, age 39 years, appeared on the US Census of 1850 at Putnam Valley, Putnam County, New York.⁶ According to the Federal Census in 1850, Elijah was a farmer.⁶ Elijah, age 49 years, and Betsy Travis, age 49 years, appeared on the US Census of 1860 at Putnam Valley, Putnam County, New York.⁷ According to the Federal Census in 1860, Elijah was a farmer.⁷ Elijah, age 59 years, and Betsy Travis, age 59 years, appeared on the US Census of 1870 at Putnam Valley, Putnam County, New York.⁸ According to the Federal Census in 1870, Elijah was a farmer.⁸ Elijah, age 69 years, and Betsy Travis, age 69 years, appeared on the US Census of 1880 at Putnam Valley, Putnam County, New York.⁹ According to the Federal Census in 1880, Elijah was a farmer.⁹ He died on 25 December 1883 at Putnam Valley, Putnam County, New York, at age 73.^1,10,3 Elijah was buried at Ballard-Barrett Cemetery, Mahopac Falls, Putnam County, New York.³
