Gilbert Travis was born circa 1760 at Yorktown, Westchester County, New York.1 He was the son of James Travis and Phebe Covert.1 Gilbert, appeared on the US Census of 1790 at Phillipstown, Putnam County, New York. The enumeration reads:
Gilbert Travis married Rachel Lent, daughter of Jacob Lent and Rachel Post, on 1 November 1791 at Winchester County, New York.1
Gilbert Travis married Sarah Lent, daughter of Jacob Lent and Rachel Post, in 1793.1 Gilbert wrote his will on 10 May 1847 at Yorktown, Westchester County, New York.3 He died in November 1848 at Westchester County, New York.1 His will was proved on 27 November 1848.3
