Joseph Roy was born on 12 January 1841 at Saint-Esprit, Québec, Canada.1,3,2 He was the son of Louis Roy and Nathalie Bonin.1,2 Joseph Roy was christened on 1 December 1841 in the Église St-Esprit, Saint-Esprit, Québec, Canada.2

Joseph Roy, age 22, married Marie-Adelaide Gagnon, age 21 , daughter of Joseph Gagnon and Marie-Delphine Giguère, on 19 May 1863 at the Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal, Montréal, Québec, Canada.1,4 Joseph, age 29 years, and Marie-Adelaide Roy, age 29 years appeared on the Canadian Census of 1871 at Lévis, Québec, Canada.5 He immigrated on 1 March 1877 to Cohoes, Albany County, New York.4 Joseph Roy appeared as Head of Household with an unknown person , his wife, on the United States Census of 1880 at 119 Wilmar Avenue, Cohoes, Albany County, New York.3 According to the census in 1880, Joseph was a cabinet maker.3

Compeller's Notes:
Second Marriage and Death: Much more research needs to be done on this family. Compounding the issues is the name Joseph. In Québec, if a boy's first name was not Joseph, then he was christened Joseph. Roy is also a very common name. Hence Joseph Roy is akin to John Smith. In Ancestry.com Member Trees is a second marriage to a Mary Panker, and a death date of 13 July 1908. I found the Find-a-Grave record for the Joseph Roy who died on 13 July 1908, and it states his father was Augustine. Clearly a different Joseph. Also, in the 1880 Census, our Joseph was married to Ada. Adelaide easily becomes Ada, while Mary does not.
