     Alvin W. Woodman was born on 10 February 1840 at Auburn, Maine.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Deacon Greenleaf Hatch Woodman and Dorothy E. Dunham. Alvin, age 10, appeared on the US Census of 1850 living at Auburn, Maine,in the household of his parents, Greenleaf Hatch and Dorothy E. Woodman; According to the census, their real estate was valued at $4,000 and their personal estate at $1,000.7 Alvin, age 19 years, appeared on the US Census of 1860 at Stoneham, Massachusetts, as a lodger with the Rowe Family. He was a cordwainer (shoe maker).8 He enlisted 17 Jul 1862 in Company D of the 33rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. On 1 May 1863, he was promoted to sergeant. Alvin was wounded 29 October 1863 at the battle of Wauhatchie, Tennessee, He was discharged 21 May 1864.4,9,10,11

Alvin W. Woodman, age 27, married Elizabeth Mary Lowell, age 27 , daughter of James Lowell Jr. and Jane G. Baker, on 5 December 1867 at Lewiston, Maine. They had no children together.12,13 Alvin's wife, Elizabeth, died on 23 August 1868.5,14

Alvin W. Woodman, age 30, married Phebe Adelaid Briggs, age 28 , daughter of Hart Briggs and Susan Newhall, on 15 November 1870 at Reading, Massachusetts.

According to the Federal Census in 1880, Alvin was the chief mechanic in a cotton mill.16 Alvin, age 39 years, and Phebe Woodman, age 37 years, appeared on the US Census of 1880 at 91 Bates Street, Lewiston, Maine.16 Alvin was employed by the Bates Manufacturing Co. as a master mechanic circa 1885 at Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Massachusetts.17 Alvin and Phebemoved to Brockton, Massachusetts, in 1889.4 He appears in the 1890 Veterans Schedule living in Brockton, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.9 Alvin and Phebemoved to Connecticut in 1893.4 Alvin and Phebemoved back to Brockton, Massachusetts, in 1896.4 Alvin, age 59 years, and Phebe, age 57 years, appeared on the US Census of 1900 on 52 Wilder Street, Brockton, Massachusetts.1 According to the Federal Census in 1900, Alvin was a carpenter.1 Alvin's wife, Phebe, died on 9 January 1904; from cancer of the rectum.4,5,18,19,20 Alvin, age 69 years, appeared on the US Census of 1910 at 28 Prospect Street, Brockton, Massachusetts, He was listed as a widower.21 He died on 9 September 1917 at Brockton, Massachusetts, at age 77.4,19,5 Alvin's obituary of 17 September 1917, reads:

Death at Brockton of Alvin Woodman, Formerly Superintendent of Slater Mills-Dwyer

News has been received in the borough of the death of Alvin Woodman of Brockton. Twenty-five years, ago Mr. Woodman and his family lived in Jewett City and for a number of years he was superintendent of the W. A. Slater mills.

He was in his 78th year and had been in failing health for some time. He was a native of Maine, and is survived by his two daughters, Mrs. William G. Allen and Miss Lora Copeland, and one brother, Milton C. Woodman of Rochester, N. Y. Mrs. Allen will be remembered by Jewett City people as Miss Lizzie Woodman. The deceased has lived in Brockton since 1889. He was a machinist by trade, and a veteran of the Civil war with a record in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, which will always stand to his credit.

For seventeen years after the war he was the superintendent of the Bates Manufacturing Co., of Lewiston, He and his family have many warm friends here who will learn of his death with, sorrow.
