In 1313, he was one of the noblemen appointed a commissioner to negotiate peace with Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland.
In 1316, he became the the third Baron de Ros of Helmsley upon the death of his father.
From 1316 to 1335, he served in Scotland.
From 20 November 1317 to 12 September 1342, he was a Member of Parliament.
In 1326, he was the Sheriff of Yorkshire.

On 17 June 1285, he became Baron Ros upon the death of his father.
From 1295 to 1316, he was a Member of Parliament.
In 1296, he was one of the competitors for the Scottish crown through his Grandmother, Isabel, the natural daughter of William the Lion. For his battles in Scotland, Edward I granted him Hamlake Castle.
