In 1173, he joined with his brothers in a revolt against his father, which ended the next year. He then set about establishing his authority in the Aquitaine. In 1177, King Louis demanded that he marry the Princess Alice, and the matter was submitted to arbitration. With his brother, Henry’s, death in 1183, he became the heir to the throne of England. Henry II called him to give Aquitaine to his brother John. This lead to another war, which Henry II won. While he helped defeat the Moslems at the Battle of Arsuf, they were not strong enough to win Jerusalem. He made peace with Saladin and was allowed to visit Jerusalem. In March 1190, Richard I voided his marriage contract with Alice of France. [Richard, at age 33, married Berengara of Navarre] On his return from the Crusade, he was imprisoned by the Duke of Austria. In 1194, upon the payment of a large ransom, he was released.
