David, Earl of Crawford, accepted the challenge, and London Bridge appointed as the place of combat. They fought on St. George’s Day, with Earl David the victor. John had a spear broken on his helm in the first run. He was unhorsed in the third run. Earl David, immediately dismounted, and embraced Lord Welles, that all might know that there was no animosity between them.
