    • History: He and his brother came over with the Conqueror. During the reign of William II Rufus, he was Bow-Bearer to the King. He supported King Henry I against Robert "Curthose" and fought nobly in the Battle of Tenerchiebray where he slew the horse of Robert "Curthose". Later while Henry I besieged a castle in Normandy, Sir Nigil was first to enter the breach, sword in hand and delivered up the fortress to the king. For these and other services, he was granted much land including Mowbray and became one of the most powerful men in England.
