In 1126, Maud’s father, Henry I, had her declared heir presumptive. When he died in 1135, she went to Normandy to claim her inheritance. England, however, declared Stephen of Blois king. In 1139, Maud landed in England with 140 knights, and besieged Arundel Castle. A civil war ensued with Stephen being captured in February 1141 in Lincoln and imprisoned in Bristol. Eventually an agreement was reached where Stephen continued as King, but upon his death, Maud’s son, Henry would become King of England.
