In 486 BCE, he was crowned the King of Persia.
In 485 BCE, he suppressed a revolt in Egypt. Continuing his father's attacks on Greece, he bridged the Hellispoint, and marched through Thrace, Macedoinia and Thessaly. Leonidas and the 300 Spartans checked for a time at Thermopylæ. He then marched south, and burnt Athens. In 479 BCE, both his army and fleet were beaten at Salamis.
