14. | Arnold I "the Old", Count of Flanders and Artois was born between 885 and 890 in Flanders, Belgium (son of Baldwin II "the Bald", Count of Flanders and Artois and Ælfthryth); died on 27 Mar 965 in Flanders, Belgium. Other Events and Attributes:
- General Information: He was also known as Arnold I "the Great."
- Military: say 938; He waged a war in the late 930's against William Longsword, the Duke of Normandy. Some sources state that a peace conference was held in December 942, and that Arnolph arranged for the murder of William Longsword at that time. Other sources state that "Arnolph waged war against William of Normandy, whom he defeated and slew."
Arnold married Adelaide de Vermandois in 934. Adelaide (daughter of Herbert II, Count of Vermandois and Troyes and Hildebrande of Neustria, Princess of the West Franks) was born about 915; died in 960 in Bruges, Flanders, Belguim. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
