    He was deposed by his brother, but escaped, and was later restored to the throne. He fought the Eastern Empire from 503 to 504, and again from 524 to 531. In 531, he invaded Syria.

    In 430, he was crowned the King of Persia.

    He persecuted the Christians, which lead to war with Rome. Baranes V was defeated in 422, and granted the same toleration to Christians as Zoroastrians received in the Roman Empire.

    He is mentioned in The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam:
