• Legal: 11 Oct 1574; On 11 October 1574, depositions were taken in Dedham in respect of a suit in the Duchy of Lancaster between Thomas Seckford, lord of the Manor of Dedham Hall, and Robert Forthe concerning the entering and intruding upon certain lands and tenements in Dedham. One of the deponents for the plaintiff was Henry Sherman, who gave his age as “62 years or thereabouts.” He said he had lived in Dedham “for the space of 40 years,” and that he had been a copyholder of Dedham Hall for 20 years.

Executors were to be sons Henry and Edmond.

Notes:

Ancestry: In New Light on Henry Sherman, Mrs. B. L. Stratton conclusively proved that Henry Sherman the elder was not the son of that name of Thomas Sherman of Yaxley, Suffolk. That Henry, who was under age 21 in 1551, had a son Thomas who in 1587 was living in Diss, Norfolk, where his children were living in the early 1600s. In contrast, Henry Sherman the Dedham clothier was born about 1512, settled in Dedham about 1534, was fathering children in the 1540s, and was not survived by a son named Thomas. Exhaustive research, by myself and others before me, has yielded no clue to the true origin of the Dedham clothier.

Henry married Agnes Perpoynt about 1539. Agnes (daughter of Robert Perpoynt) was buried on 14 Oct 1580 in Dedham, Essex, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

• Legal: 13 Nov 1587, Westminster, London, England; On 13 November 1587 there was a Pardon of Alienation for John Lawrence of Southelmham, to whom by will 12 July 1574 [sic] the late John Burward bequeathed his lands in Bredfield, Bouze, and Hacheston, co. Suffolk, for 6s. 8d. paid to the Queen?s farmer.
• Complier's Note: say 1700; From a pedigree recorded by the antiquary Thomas Tanner, Bishop of St. Asaph (1674?-1735): The pedigree is headed by"_____ Lawrence, a famous preacher, a reverend grave minister who had been a preacher to those who fleeing from religion in Q. Marie?s day [1553?58] met together in woods & secret places, as they could. He was a gentleman of a great estate & exceeding liberality to the poor. In the time of Q. Elizabeth he preached at Fressingfield. He owned St James Park in South Elmham.
