Nathaniel married first, Deborah Smith, the daughter of John Smith of Martha's Vineyard. Deborah died 8 March 1676 in Hampton, New Hampshire. After his first wife, Deborah, died, Nathaniel took a staff and dropped it on the floor. It pointed southwest, and so he traveled in that direction to find a new wife. Arriving in Woburn, Massachusetts he found the Widow Wyman. He proposed stating that he was going to Boston, and would ask for her reply upon his return. After Mary's death, on 23 October 1689 in Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, Nathaniel married third, Elizabeth, widow of John Knill.
