• Will: 8 Jan 1607, Dinton, Wiltshire, England; In her will of 8 January 1607 Elizabeth Earth requested burial in the parish church of Denton, and made customary bequests to the cathedral church of Sarum, the poor of the parishes of Petersfield, Eastmeane [East Meon], Froxfeild, all in the county of South[Hampton, i.e., Hampshire], and Collingbourne and Denton in Wiltshire. She left £10 to the executor of her will “to be bestowed at my buriall on the poor and the rest of such people that shalbe present, in meate and drinke.” She directed that a copyhold tenement in Froxfeild, evidently entailed to her and then her son Sir Gabriel Pyle, was to be held by her son only for life and then settled on his son Thomas. She made bequests of £100 each to Ursula Webb, wife of Mr. Thomas Webbe, and Elizabeth Gerishe, wife of Mr. John Gerishe, and Dorothie Langrysh, wife of Robert Langrish, and £60 to Anne Shawe, wife of Robert Shawe, gent., on condition that each of the husbands named post bond for twice the amount bequeathed, that after the deaths of their wives, the legacies would be divided among their children. No relationship to any of the four is mentioned, but later in the will Elizabeth gave each of them bequests of silver spoons and/or other household goods. She named her sisters Joane Massey, Ursula Earth, and Anne Bettisworth; her sister’s son Ra[l]ph Greene; her daughter Jane Ludlow and Jane’s son Gabriel Ludlow and other three sons Roger, Thomas, and George Ludlow; and her son Gabriel Pyle and his sons Francis, Thomas, William, and Gabriel, the youngest, who was to have her lease of the tithes of “Dynton farme” and all the term of the unexpired lease therein. She made a bequest also to “my daughter Pyle” [probably her son Gabriel’s wife] of a crystal salt [cellar], the best bed and bedstead in the long chamber, with the rug, blankets, bolster, and pillows for it. All the rest of her household goods and wearing apparel not otherwise bequeathed, she gave to her daughter Jane Ludlow and to the children of Jane and of her other daughter Anne Browne, deceased, to be equally divided.
