    In 1138, he was at the siege of Shrewsbury, but soon after, 1139, joined the forces of the Empress Maud. He received her in Bristol, and took her to Gloucester where he did homage.

    He was created the Earl of Herefored by the Empress Maud. She also bestowed the Castle of Abergaveny on him.

    He founded the Llanthony Priory.
