Llywelyn negotiated with Pope Innocent II for permission to marry the daughter of Reginald, the king of the Isle of Man. In 1203, it was finally granted, but by then Llwelyn wanted the hand of Joan to strengthen his position.

He signed a treaty with King John of England. The treaty required Llywelyn to pay homage to King John and recognize him as overlord of Wales. John offered his illegitimate daughter, Joan's hand in marriage.
Petition:
He petitioned to have Joan's son, Dafydd, recognized as his only heir. The petition was quickly granted.
