He asked to be buried in the churchyard in Idmiston near the bodies of his two children. He made bequests to the parish church there, to the chapel of Porton, and the poor of the hamlets Porton and Combleton, both within the parish of Idmiston. His wife Agnes was to be sole executrix and to have the use of household goods during her natural life; afterwards the named items were to go to son Richard, who was to have several farm implements within a week of his father’s death. Son Walter was given £10 and “a table boord and a forme of mine that standeth in Doctor Hydes ffarme at Idmiston now in the occupation of Thomas Hayward.” To daughter Agnes, he gave a “table board and forme” at his wife’s death; to daughter Phillis Judd 40s within two years; to daughter Katherine 20s and to each of her four children (Phillis, Richard, Jone, and Mary) 10s each at age 18; to daughter Margaret Smith 20s and to three of her children (Katherine, Margaret, and Henry) 10s each at age 18 and to another of her children, Agnes Smith, 40s at age 18 or marriage. Mr. Sharpe, minister of Idmiston, and Richard Woodfoord of Combleton, yeoman, were to be overseers. Finally, the testator directed that if a lease which “my ffather bought of this my tene[ment] and two yard lands in Porton” expired before his daughters’ legacies were paid, his executrix should not be chargeable to pay the same, but she was not to “reap or receive any benefitt” of the property after the expiration of the lease. |
