History |
1672 [4] |
After her first husband died, she moved back with her parents. Thomas Tweksbury also lived with her parents, having left his wife and children in England. They flirted for a while, then after he showed her a letter stating that his wife had died, their affair became serious. Mary kept the letter next to her bosom and the two were seen kissing several times. She confided to her friends that "when her husband Bartlet was alive she thought it was impossible for her to have loved any other as she did him, but that now she loved this man better than she loved him." While there were rumors of an impending marriage, the Selectman stepped in and talked with her father. It seems that the letter may have been a forgery according to the Selectman. When Thomas heard that she was to marry Richard Martin, he was furious and said that she "would never love any man more than a fortnight." He soon got over his anger, and the affair may well have continued, as he frequently visited the family with whom she still lived. The court became involved but nothing was ever proved. |
