  Capt. John Locke. He was a carpenter. He was born about 1626 in Yorkshire, England. They lived for a time in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, having an 8 acre lot granted to him in 1656/57 between John Jackson and William Cotton. He probably settled on this land in 1666 without permission of the town. Later, they settled on Jocelyn's (Locke's) Neck in what is now Rye. He died on Sunday 26 August 1696 in Rye, New Hampshire, killed in his field by Indians. He had laid his musket down and was working in his field, reaping grain, when several Indians crept up on him and shot him with his own weapon. They then rushed him, supposing him dead, when he seized his sickle and cut the nose off of one of his assailants. Years afterwards, his son met a noseless Indian in Portsmouth.
