His father was murdered in 1397, and he was his heir, but was debarred by his father's attainder from inheriting his lands and honors. He and Henry of Monmouth (future Henry V, and son of Henry Bolingbroke) became ward's of the crown. Richard II took both boys to Ireland in 1398 where they were imprisoned at Kells, Trim, in Ireland. Once Richard II was deposed, Henry Bolingbroke ordered their release and summoned them home but Humphrey, who was sickly, died on the way. |
