According to Flanders (2000), "He may have been a passenger on the HMS Confidence, from Southampton, England. According to an account given by William Bradford, Governor of the Massachusetts Colony, a ship arriving from England at the time Steven allegedly arrived, encountered a violent storm off the coast of New England and was nearly lost in a shipwreck, and had to put in at Portsmouth, N.H. in stead of Plymouth. The story matches the one given by Steven Flanders, I. It describes his voyage over in every detail. Having lost everything on his voyage over, including valuable documents which would have resulted in his attaining money and land, Steven Flanders, I, had to start from nothing in the New World but his name, when he was already middle aged for his times." |
