    • In Jetté (1983), her parents are listed as Barthelemi Miteouamigoukoue or Mitcominqui, who was born around 1600 in Québec and Carole Pachirini. Jette incorrectly translated Carolus (latin for Charles) into Carole. Barthelemi mentioned above was in reality Barthelemi Anaraoui, an Algonquin of the clan of Sachem Pachirini who was baptized by Father Imbert Duperon on 4 February 1643 in Montréal. Her parentage remains unknown. [1, 2]

History The Jesuit missionaries, in transcribing the languages of the Native Peoples, used standard French letters to represent the vowels and consonants they heard, whenever that was possible. But there was one phoneme that did not correspond to any sound used in French, a sound that was similar, but not identical to, the vowel [u], as in the word "tout", and similar, but not identical to, the semi-consonant [w], as in the word "ouest". This phoneme was transcribed in written script by a symbol that consisted of two Greek letters superscribed (written one on top of the other), either omicron below omega (o under w) or omicron below upsilon (o under u). But no such symbol was included among the fonts available to French typesetters whose task it was to set the Jesuit Relations into print. And so, they used the closest symbol they could find, the number [8].
