- His singular christian name of Saher, or Saier, is a likely a corruption from the Saxon Segher, Sigher, or Seagar, a Conqueror. Eliza S. Quincy refers to him as "John de Quincy, created Earl of Winchester by King John, 1207." [4]
- In 1207, he was created the first Earl of Winchester. [5]
- In 1213, Saher de Quincy was one of the twenty-five sureties of the Magna Charta, for which he was excommunicated. He was a leader of the Barons who forced John to sign the Magna Charta. [2, 4, 6]
