Zacharie and Jean Guyon signed an agreement with Surgeon Robert Giffard, in which he would pay their and one family members passage to Canada, and provide food and lodging once there for three years from the date of 24 June 1634. After two years, both men would be allowed to have the rest of their families transported at the expense of Robert Giffard. Each man would be given a few head of livestock and one thousand arpents of land with the right to build on it, as well as the right to hunt, fish, and trade with the Indians. It appears that Zacharie took his entire family over at once instead of waiting the two years. |

By a ruling drawn up on 3 February 1637, Zacharie Cloutier took possession of his fief, which was named "La Cloutièrie." He signed this document using the symbol of an axe. His fief was on land that became part of the parish of Château-Richer later. |
History |
2 Jul 1646 [3] |
There were disagreements between Zacharie and Robert Giffard, who was Zacharie's seigneur, to whom he owed homage. Zacharie was of the opinion that they were equals. On 2 July 1646, Giffard sued Zacharie and Jean Guyon for failing to render him "faith and homage." On 19 July 1646, the Governor ordered them to comply. They partially complied, but refused to present the inventory which was required of all landowners. One 20 August 1646, the Governor ordered them to completely comply with their requirements. |
