• Charter/Grant/Gift: say 1680, Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts; Eliot's charity was a very prominent trait in his character, and he frequently gave more than he could afford, for his own family often suffered for the necessaries of life. The treasurer of the parish, on paying him his annual salary, and knowing well his lavish expenditures for the relief of others, put the money in a handkerchief, and tied it in as many hard knots as possible, in hopes thus to compel him to carry it all home. On his way thither he called to see a poor sick woman, and on entering he gave the family his blessing, and told them that God had sent them some relief He then began to untie the knots, but after many efforts to do so, and impatient at the perplexity and delay to get at his money, he gave the whole to the mother, saying with a trembling accent—"Here, my dear, take it; I believe the Lord designs it all for you."

• History: 1774; A deserter from the British troops stationed in Boston, before the out break of war, came to Thomas one evening begging protection. He was fed, and a hole made in the hay mow in the barn. The next day, soldiers came along, and while the stabbed the barn with their bayonets, the deserter was not discovered. That night, the deserter was sent with Thomas' son on two horses, with instructions to go as far as possible, allowing the son to return with the horses before daylight. It was said that a man returned many years later looking for the family how had saved him, but no one in the town knew of the incident.
• History: 1775; During the siege of Boston, Roxbury was often under fire from the British. When cannon balls started falling near by, the Thomas removed his family to a part of Roxbury beyond the range of the British guns.

At the meeting were Benjamin Mayo; Nathan Goddard; Nehemiah Ward, serving as clerk; John Stow; Edward Ward; and Ebenezer Foskett. To this document they added the words, "Moreover, the subscribers do covenant, promise and agree that the said Meeting House is build and intended for a Congregational Church and Society to worship in; nevertheless, we do hereby covenant, promise and agree that whenever there shall be a Town, District or Parish set off by the General Court in this place then the said House shall be free for all the inhabitants thereof to hold all their legal, Town, District, or Parish meetings in." • History: 16 Apr 1863; The regiment was sent to North Carolina as part of the Burnside expedition. He was captured near Winfield, North Carolina on 16 April 1863 . The story of his capture is given by Denny in the regimental history of the 25th Massachusetts Volunteers: Upon one occasion a "secesh woman" came within the lines with her bundles of luggage, desiring permission to pass into Dixie. Captain Parkhurst found that her luggage was contraband of war and refused to permit her to transfer her "dry goods" to the possession of the enemy, but "allowed" that she might go as soon as her pleasure permitted. The woman satisfied to leave her goods, if she could go without them, requested to be furnished with means of crossing the Chowan and an escort. The gallant captain not being proof against woman's eloquent appeals, consented to comply wither wishes and detailed Sergeant Lyman S. Wheeler and Private Marcus H. Ward both of Company I, with a couple of negro oarsmen, to convey the woman up the river and deliver her to the nearest Confederate outpost. At the enemy's outpost the woman was delivered up and then the Confederates seized Wheeler and Ward as prisoners of war! Company I lost two good men and two muskets, and the colored men lost their liberty, for a time at least. Wheeler and Ward were exchanged a long time afterwards. On 17 July 1863, he was paroled and returned to his regiment. When his enlistment was up, he reenlisted and took a furlough back to Orange in January 1864.

Mrs. Stone was an accomplished pianist and organist and was organist for several years at the Community Church of North Orange and Tully. She was an avid gardener, well-known in the area for her rock gardens. She was a lifelong member of the First Universalist Church in Orange and served as chairman of the church fairs for many years. She later organized the "La Petite" flower shows which were held at the church for many years. She also made quilts and braided rugs for various church projects. She was a past president of the Orange Women's Club and was instrumental in forming the Garden Clubdivision of the Women's Club. She was inducted into the Clara Barton Sisterhood of the Universalist-Unitarian Women's Federation in 1979."
