She fell more then four months ago and has been a constant sufferer since. She was born March 10, 1814."

• History: 16 Apr 1863; The regiment was sent to North Carolina as part of the Burnside expedition. He was captured near Winfield, North Carolina on 16 April 1863 . The story of his capture is given by Denny in the regimental history of the 25th Massachusetts Volunteers: Upon one occasion a "secesh woman" came within the lines with her bundles of luggage, desiring permission to pass into Dixie. Captain Parkhurst found that her luggage was contraband of war and refused to permit her to transfer her "dry goods" to the possession of the enemy, but "allowed" that she might go as soon as her pleasure permitted. The woman satisfied to leave her goods, if she could go without them, requested to be furnished with means of crossing the Chowan and an escort. The gallant captain not being proof against woman's eloquent appeals, consented to comply wither wishes and detailed Sergeant Lyman S. Wheeler and Private Marcus H. Ward both of Company I, with a couple of negro oarsmen, to convey the woman up the river and deliver her to the nearest Confederate outpost. At the enemy's outpost the woman was delivered up and then the Confederates seized Wheeler and Ward as prisoners of war! Company I lost two good men and two muskets, and the colored men lost their liberty, for a time at least. Wheeler and Ward were exchanged a long time afterwards. On 17 July 1863, he was paroled and returned to his regiment. When his enlistment was up, he reenlisted and took a furlough back to Orange in January 1864.

• Obituary: 23 Aug 2012; ATHOL -- Richard W. Whelpley, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, at the Legend Center in Gardner. Dick was born in Boston, Jan. 20, 1932, the son of Edward H. and Evelyn (Seymore) Whelpley. Dick and his first wife Andrea (Travis) Whelpley were married on Aug. 13, 1949, and she predeceased him in 1987. He and Andrea moved to Athol in 1956, where they raised their four children. Dick was a self-employed businessman all of his working life and learned the trade of automobile mechanics from his father and his brother Howard. He was well known in this area and well respected for his knowledge of foreign cars and his fairness to his customers, many of whom did business with him for many years and became some of his closest friends. He owned and operated Silver Lake Esso, School Street Foreign Motors, Dick Whelpley's Arco Station and most recently Import Motors of Orange until his retirement in 2009 due to health issues. Dick met and married Virginia (Mallet) (Gabrenas) in 1989 and eagerly and proudly assumed the role of stepdad and "Grandpa" to her four children and grandchildren. He was happiest in their presence and in the company of his many pets over the last 23 years. Richard served proudly in a number of community positions for the town of Athol, including on the Conservation Commission, the Planning Board, the EDIC and the Board of Selectmen, where he was chairman for two years. He participated in these roles with the same commitment and fairness that was a hallmark of his life. Richard enjoyed bowling on a league for many years at the Gardner Ten Pins. He leaves his wife Virginia; his children, Elizabeth Ringus and her husband Paul, David Whelpley and his wife Priscilla, Thomas Whelpley and his wife Kathy, and Christopher Whelpley; his sister, Elaine Kolinsky; his stepchildren, Mark Gabrenas and his wife Jennifer, Kevin Gabrenas and his wife Deb, Shelly Labrie and her husband Paul, and Meredith Burt and her husband Ben; his grandchildren, Jeremy, Justin, Jonathan, Travis and Eric Whelpley, Stephanie Welsh, Erin Burke and Adrian Ringus. He also leaves his step-grandchildren, Sarah, Mark, Joshua, Kristin and her mother Sue, and Zachary Gabrenas and his mother Jen, Tessa Burt, Darius Burt and Ayden Labrie; five great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Tom Travis, and his God son, David Flint, and many nieces and nephews and wonderful friends whom he cherished. • Obituary: 26 Apr 2016; Shirley Buell, 98, of Cabot, formerly of Athol, Mass., passed away April 13 at the Concordia Lutheran Ministries Ortal Assisted Living Center. Shirley was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of Harry L. and Ruth E. (Ward) Woodman. Shirley was active in the Girl Scouts and earned its highest award, the Golden Eaglet, in 1936. She graduated from Lowell High School in 1935 and Lowell Business School in 1937. During World War II, she worked at the Army Hospital on Fort Devens, where she met her first husband, Capt. Robert G. Roy. During his military service, they lived in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Germany and Virginia. Upon his retirement in 1957, they settled in Athol. Robert G. Roy died in 1966, and in 1979, she married Harry C. Buell, and moved to Petersham, Mass. Harry Buell died in 2002. In 2008, she moved to West Virginia with her son and his family. In 2010, she moved to Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot, living next door to her sister, Janice. She worked at military hospitals at Fort Devens, Mass., Stuttgart, Germany, and Butler. After she moved to Athol, she worked at the former Minute Tapioca plant in Orange, Mass., and Athol Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Athol, where she was a lay eucharistic minister, vestry person, youth leader and newsletter publisher. Mrs. Buell served on the board of directors for the former Peoples Bridge Action and worked on the polls and voter registration in Petersham. An avid reader, she enjoyed sewing, embroidery, quilting, flower gardening and rug braiding. She was predeceased by her husbands, Robert G. Roy and Harry C. Buell; and her sister, Janice Farmer. Mrs. Buell is survived her son, AVCM Robert A. Roy of Paw Paw, W.Va.; her grandson, Robert W. Roy of Wexford; and three stepsons, David Buell of North Sullivan, Maine, Larry Buell of Petersham and Charles Buell of Petersham. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren. BUELL — Calling hours for Shirley Buell, who died Wednesday, April 13, 2016, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol, with a Resurrection Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Athol.
