There is much debate about the ancestry of Agatha, the mother of St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland. The dynastic usurpation and post-invasion trauma of 1066 dictated that St. Margaret's maternal origins were of secondary importance to the English Chroniclers until the marriage of her daughter, Edith-Matilda, to Henry I in 1100. There are two basic solutions, Slavic or Salian. Humphreys (2003) leans towards the Slavic, however I have followed the Salian. Moore (2019) has proved the Salian.

In 1126, Maud’s father, Henry I, had her declared heir presumptive. When he died in 1135, she went to Normandy to claim her inheritance. England, however, declared Stephen of Blois king. In 1139, Maud landed in England with 140 knights, and besieged Arundel Castle. A civil war ensued with Stephen being captured in February 1141 in Lincoln and imprisoned in Bristol. Eventually an agreement was reached where Stephen continued as King, but upon his death, Maud’s son, Henry would become King of England.

In 1290, when Alexander III, King of Scotland died without heirs, Edward intervened as feudal lord. Margaret Maid of Norway and heir to the throne of Scotland, then a child, was betrothed to the future Edward II, and sailed from Norway to England. She died in 1290 before reaching England leaving the throne empty. Edward chose John Baliol from among thirteen candidates as King of the Scots. While John Balioli did homage to Edward the Scots resisted English domination.

Edward invaded Scotland and soundly defeated the Scots under Baliol. Edward forced Balliol to abdicate The Scottish barons did homage to Edward as their king. William Wallace incited a rebellion in 1297, defeated the English army at Stirling, and harassed England's northern counties. The next year, Edward defeated Wallace at the Battle of Falkirk but encountered continued resistance until Wallace's capture and execution in 1304. Robert the Bruce revolted in 1306 against England ultimately defeating Edward II at Bannockburn.

When his father died in 1240, he soon rose in revolt and regained much of what had been lost on his father's death. According to Matthew of Paris "During all this time, the Welsh, swarming from their lurking-places, like bees, spread fire and slaughter, and unceasingly ravaged the countries adjoining their own; the king [sent] three hundred knights...with the necessary money and supplies for the read, to check the insolence of the Welsh." He also says that the king, like a woman, stayed from from the fight in comfort and safety. By 1245, Dafydd was pursued into Northern Wales. When winter came, the English forces withdrew, but the revolt crumbled when Dafydd died.
