    • History: He was one of the chief commanders in the Battle of the Standard fought in Scotland near Northallertonin 1138. He was taken prisoner along with King Stephen by the Empress Maud at the Battle of Lincoln. In 1148, he took the cross and accompanied King Louis of France to the Holy Land there enhancing his reputation by defeating a Muslim in single combat. He supported Prince Henry in his rebellion against Henry II and thereby lost some castles. His piety was well known, and he again took up the cross, traveling to the Holy Land where he was taken prisoner. He was freed by the Knights Templars, however died soon after

    About 1313, he was the Sheriff of Yorkshire and Governor of the City of York. He was commanded by Edward II, to seize Henry de Perey, for allowing Piers de Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall to escape from Scarborough Castle.

    In 1314, he was part of an expidition into Scotland and was made one of the Wardens of the Marches.

    In 1317, he became the Governor of the City of York and Scarborough Castle.

    In 1318, he became the Governor of Malton.

    Died:
    He was executed for having been connected by hanging with the rising of the Northern Earls against the Despencers and taking part in the Battle of Boroughbridge. His estates were seized by the Crown.
