John was then relieved of his church for holding secret religious services at the home of Lord Robert Rich.

    • Legal: Oct 1586, London, England; He was arrested for holding a service with a secret congregation at the house of Henry Martin at St. Andrews. He was thrown into Clink prison. While in prision, he was visited by Henry Barrowe, who had become interested in John Greenwood's teachings. Henry was arrested without warrant and locked up with John Greenwood. A few days later they were transferred to Fleet Prison where they languished for seven years. He was allowed to leave prison in the Autumn of 1592, and he went to live with Roger Rippon in Southwalk. He again was appointed the teacher of a puritan group. On 5 December 1592, he was arrested again and sent back to Fleet Prison. On 23 March 1593, he was tried along with Henry Barrowe for publishing and dispensing seditious books. Proof of the charge was found in their writings, which had been smuggled out and published during their stay in prison. They were found guilty and both sentenced to be hanged. The next day, he was taken out to be hanged, but received a stay of execution. On 31 March 1593, they both were again taken to the place of execution, and tied by the neck to the execution tree. Their execution was again stayed.
