Soon (2 Jan 1787) they attempted to march up the hill and General Shepard being there in person, gave orders to my father to fire from the artillery over their heads, then to the right, then to the left, all of which did not check them. He then cried "Give it to them in front, my boys" and then they fired a grist of grape straight among them which scattered them like sheep, made them run and scale the walls, killing three or four, and wounded as many more, and they took to the State of Vermont as fast as possible, past my father's house, and filled it full from top to bottom."

To this document they added the words, "Moreover, the subscribers do covenant, promise and agree that the said Meeting House is build and intended for a Congregational Church and Society to worship in; nevertheless, we do hereby covenant, promise and agree that whenever there shall be a Town, District or Parish set off by the General Court in this place then the said House shall be free for all the inhabitants thereof to hold all their legal, Town, District, or Parish meetings in." • History: 1892; According to his obituary, "Mr. Mayo was well known and respected for his uprightness of character, constant and faithful wherever duty called him. He was a man of remarkable physical and mental activity, possessing a kind, pleasant disposition and irrepressible perseverance for daily labor....Last Winter he had a paralytic shock that affected his throat, destroying the natural taste for food and drink and since then has taken but little solid food, living almost wholly on liquids. Aside from this he has suffered from a severe kidney trouble for many years. Four months since he met with a serious accident at the furniture shop and while he fully recovered from the wound he gradually wore out, always patient and uncomplaining."

• History: 20 Aug 1895; Her obituary reads "Mrs. Esther Mayo Ward, one of our aged and respected residents passed away last week Monday morning at three o'clock. She had long been ill, partly from fracturing her hip by a fall. She was born here March 10, 1814 and spent most of her eighty-one years of her life in this place. She was a member of the Congregational church here. She leaves six children, four of whom live in Orange and North Orange; Mr. Wales Ward in Saratoga, N.Y. and Mrs. Eddy Brooks at Grand Rapids, Michigan. All were present at the funeral as was her brother, Mr. William Mayo and his wife from Leominster." Her obituary in the Orange Enterprise reads, "Mrs. Esther R, widow of the late Thomas Ward, passed away Monday morning, after a long and painful illness. She fell more then four months ago and has been a constant sufferer since. She was born March 10, 1814."
