When his father died in 1240, he soon rose in revolt and regained much of what had been lost on his father's death. According to Matthew of Paris "During all this time, the Welsh, swarming from their lurking-places, like bees, spread fire and slaughter, and unceasingly ravaged the countries adjoining their own; the king [sent] three hundred knights...with the necessary money and supplies for the read, to check the insolence of the Welsh." He also says that the king, like a woman, stayed from from the fight in comfort and safety. By 1245, Dafydd was pursued into Northern Wales. When winter came, the English forces withdrew, but the revolt crumbled when Dafydd died.

According to Matthew of Paris "During all this time, the Welsh, swarming from their lurking-places, like bees, spread fire and slaughter, and unceasingly ravaged the countries adjoining their own; the king [sent] three hundred knights...with the necessary money and supplies for the read, to check the insolence of the Welsh." He also says that the king, like a woman, stayed from from the fight in comfort and safety. By 1245, Dafydd was pursued into Northern Wales. When winter came, the English forces withdrew, but the revolt crumbled when Dafydd died.

By 1268 he is recorded as studying Theology in the house of the Archbishop of York. King Henry III showed favor by supplementing his diet with the luxury of venison. The sudden death of his elder brother, Ralph, in 1274,[2] made him heir to the family estates; yet he continued to study at Oxford. But his father's death eventually forced his departure.

At Irfon Bridge the Welsh prince became separated from his army. Edmund's brothers secretly forded the river behind Llywelyn's army and surprised the Welsh. In the resulting battle Llywelyn was killed and beheaded. Edmund then sent his brother Roger Mortimer of Chirk to present Llywelyn's severed head to King Edward I of England at Rhuddlan Castle. The head was displayed on the Tower of London as a warning to all rebels.
