In 1264, during the Barons' War, he accompanied the King to the siege of Northampton. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lewes in 1264, and freed after the battle of Eversham in 1265.

He was also Baron of Topcliffe; Warden of Galloway and Ayrshire; Justiciar in Dumfries; joint Justiciar in Lancastershire, Cumberland, and Westmoreland; Constable of Scarborough Castle; Justice of the Forest beyond Trent; Keeper of Bamburgh Castle; and Keeper of the Martches.

He accompanied his grandfather, Sir John de Warenne, Earl of Surrey to Scotland.

He was knighted by the King at the capture of Berwick.
