From 337 to 363, he was at war with Rome. He defeated Constantinus III, and in 363, attacked and defeated the Roman army lead by Julian, who was killed. He then made peace with Rome that was much in the favor of Persia. He later conquered Armenia.

She was the heiress of the Gregorids, hereditary heads of the Church of Armenia, descended from St. Gregory 'the illuminator', a Parthian prince of the ruling family of Seistan, (i.e. Sakastan), in NW India. Her great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother were princesses of the Armenian branch of the Arsacid, (Arsakunik), dynasty of Parthia, Armenia, Iberia and Albania.
