• Military: 7 Aug 1862 to 6 Jun 1865; On August 7, 1862, Joseph was among the first to volunteer to serve in a company which was being raised in Princeville, Illinois by a Princeville area School Teacher by the name of John F. French. By August 13th, French had about 100 volunteers. That afternoon he led the Princeville volunteers on a 20 mile march into Peoria where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, French and 95 of his volunteers were mustered into service as Co. K of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. French was elected Captain of Co. K. On September 7, 1862, the men of the 85th & 86th Illinois marched out of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Two weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more in the coming years. After the Battle of Perryville, a Union victory, the men of McCook's Brigade headed for Nashville, Tennessee. During the next three years, Joseph served faithfully in Co. K as the men of the 86th served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. During this time, Joseph was witness to and a paricipant in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Chicakamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia; Averysboro, North Carolina; and Bentonville, North Carolina, to name a few and marched with Sherman to the Sea. After the war came to a close, the men of McCook's Brigade moved on toward Washington, D.C. There on June 6, 1865, Joseph was with the surviving members of the 86th Illinois when they were mustered out of service. They then were sent to Chicago, Illinois where they were discharged from the service and then, with the surviving members of Co. K, returned to their homes in and near Princeville.
• Married: 28 Oct 1875; Caroline Dorothy "Carrie" (Kuhn) Bachtold. She was born in Baden, Germany on December 19, 1853/54 and came to this country in 1865. Caroline and her brother Frederick are found residing in Akron Township at the time of the 1870 census. Caroline Kuhn was married to John Bachtold on April 14, 1873 in Peoria County. John Bachtold died on May 27, 1874 or 1875 and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Princeville Township Cemetery. John and Caroline may have had one son named George J. Bachtold, who died in 1874 and who was buried in the Princeville Township Cemetery. She died 19 August 1925. Issue: 1. Anna Rosetta Parents (1877-1950) 2. Fern Parents (1886-1944)
• Miscellaneous: 1887; In 1887, the surviving members of the 86th Illinois held a reunion in Peoria on the 25th Anniversary of the mustering in of the regiment. Over 100 surviving members of the 86th Illinois gathered at that reunion. Though Joseph did not attend the first reunion, he did attend several of the next reunions, including the reunion of 1890. Joseph for some unknown reason never attended another 86th Illinois reunion. He also attend several of the Co. K gatherings.
