He died "in an unusual manner." A jury of inquest was held about his death. The inquest found on the body, "several hundred spots, small ones, as if they had been shot with small shot." which, when scraped, showed "holes into his body." There were suspicions of witchcraft, and the investigation was recorded and forwarded to Boston.

Later called "The bloody brook masacre" the entire party of colonists, save just a few men were slaughtered. Only John Stebbins was said to have come out unscathed. He served under Captain Samuel Moseley throughout the war.
