    • History: Mar 1937; FURNACE FALLS INTO CAVITY A mother, two children and her brother were endangered Saturday night when most of the cellar and a section of the foundation of a South Ninth street home dropped nearly six feet into the earth when their (sic) was a cave-in in the abandoned coal mine beneath. Mrs. George Brindle, her two children, and her brother James March were at home when the cave-in occurred shortly before 8 o'clock, causing the residence, built about 12 years ago, to tilt to one side when the foundation on the southern went down into the cave-in. Mrs. Brindle said she heard a peculiar noise as though a hard sleet was beating against the windows and she surmised that the house was afire. She looked into the cellar but did not see any flames and believed the fire might be between the weather boarding. She went to a neighbor's house and called the Fire Department. When she returned to her home Mrs. Brindle went back to look into the cellar It was then she found that her cellar had gone into the bowels of the earth taking with it the concrete floor the furnace, the hot water tank, a washing machine and a large number of articles breaking water, gas and furnace pipes. There was a good fire in the furnace and when the pipes were pulled off as the furnace sank nearly six feet with the rest of the cellar. Smoke filled the house. Firemen extinguished the furnace fire. Gas and water were turned off. About a month ago there had been a drop in the yard under the front porch but this had been filled and the foundation beneath the porch rebuild. The new fall caused considerable damage to the front porch as well as the foundation on the south side of the building. Cribbing was placed beneath that side of the house to prevent further damage, the house having tilted but slightly when the foundation let go. The fall enveloped more than twothirds (sic) of the cellar, all of which had been concreted. It was believed that the fall was into the workings abandoned 13 or 14 years ago after having been operated by Bishop and Trump. They family went to the home of Mr. Brindle's father, John Brindle, who resides on the same street. The husband was not home at the time of the accident, being employed at Smock. Observers pointed out that had the cave-in occurred during the night while the family was asleep a fire might have broken out or the family overcome by fumes from the furnace. - From The Daily Courier, Connellsville PA, Monday Evening March 1, 1937 pg. 1, colum 4
