He was born on 14 January 1739 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He graduated in 1755 from in Harvard College. In May 1755, he was dismissed from the church in Groton because of hostility to the minister. He moved in 1755 to Amherst, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. He moved in 1760 to Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was a lawyer, a judge of Probate, and a state senator. He served in 1782 as as a member of the Constitutional Convention from New Hampshire. He died on Monday 2 April 1798.
