By it he became the Earl of Gloucester, however for this honor, he had to pay 20,000 marks. In April of 1215, he joined the barons against King John. On 16 December 1215, he and his brother, William, were excommunicated by the Pope. He was killed at a tournament 23 February 1216 in London, England. He was buried in Trinity Priory, Aldgate, London, England.
