- History: 1179; In August 1179, he attended the King of France on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. He was the ambassador to the Emperor in 1181, and to the King of France in October 1186. In 1184, he joined the Count of Flanders against the Count of Hainault. He was one of four generals appointed in May 1187, to wage the war with France, and on 1 September 1188, he burnt the town of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte. On 3 September 1189, he carried the Crown at the coronation of Richard I.

- General Information: Geoffrey, the 4thd Earl of Essex, was a prominent member of the government of England during the reigns of Richard I and John and served as the the Justiciar of England.
- Offices Held: 1184 to 1189; He was the Sheriff of Northants. He served again as Sheriff from 1191 to Easter 1194. From 1190 to 1193, he was Sheriff of Essex and Herts.
- Offices Held: 1185 to 1189; He was the Justice of the Forest from 1185 to 1189.
- Heir or Heiress: 1189; Geoffrey de Say inherited the Mandeville lands and titles but had to pay 7,000 marks to the crown for his succession. He failed to do so, and was then disseized. At this point Geoffrey FitzPies paid a fine of 3,000 marks and obtained all the Mandeville lands and titles through right of his wife, Beatrice.
