    • Military: 23 Apr 1776; On 23 April 1776 he was commissioned a First Lieutenant in Captain Peter Proctor's 11th Company in the 6th New Hampshire Regiment of the Massachusetts Militia.
    • Military: 1787; He was involved in Shay's Rebellion, and this story was told by his son, Joseph: "My father was Colonel of the First Regiment in General Shepard's Brigade when General Shay raised an army of 2,000 or 3,000 men in rebellion against the State laws and turned the Court out of doors. My father was sent with a regiment to Springfield to guard the stores on the hill, the guns and ammunition. Soon (2 Jan 1787) they attempted to march up the hill and General Shepard being there in person, gave orders to my father to fire from the artillery over their heads, then to the right, then to the left, all of which did not check them. He then cried "Give it to them in front, my boys" and then they fired a grist of grape straight among them which scattered them like sheep, made them run and scale the walls, killing three or four, and wounded as many more, and they took to the State of Vermont as fast as possible, past my father's house, and filled it full from top to bottom."

    • Military: 1777; He served in he Revolution as a Sergeant in Peter Proctor's Company, of which his brother, Joseph was a First Lieutenant, Col. Samuel William's Regiment. He marched to reinforce the Northern Army 10 July to 12 August 1777, a service of one month, nine days and 120 miles traveled.
    • History: 1 Jan 1781; On 1 January 1781, in Benjamin Mayo's house, a committee met, which agreed to build a meeting house, more close to them. At the meeting were Benjamin Mayo; Nathan Goddard; Nehemiah Ward, serving as clerk; John Stow; Edward Ward; and Ebenezer Foskett. To this document they added the words, "Moreover, the subscribers do covenant, promise and agree that the said Meeting House is build and intended for a Congregational Church and Society to worship in; nevertheless, we do hereby covenant, promise and agree that whenever there shall be a Town, District or Parish set off by the General Court in this place then the said House shall be free for all the inhabitants thereof to hold all their legal, Town, District, or Parish meetings in." From this meeting house grew the Town of Orange, Massachusetts. The Meeting House was dedicated 31 March 1782 . Orange remained a "District" until 1810 because the Massachusetts General Court wanted to limit membership.

He settled at Mayp's Four Corners in the eastern part of the town, where he was a merchant and a farmer besides engaging in civic and church affairs. Squire Mayo, as he was known, was famous as the father of eight very beautiful daughters who stimulated church attendance among eligible males by their presence."

The girls were handsome, ...finely rounded forms, clear sparkling eyes and delicate fairness of complexion."

On 20 August 1794, General Wayne defeated the Indians at Fallen Timber, near Toledo, Ohio. After peace was concluded, Daniel Mayo left the Army and settled in Newport, Kentucky.

She had long been ill, partly from fracturing her hip by a fall. She was born here March 10, 1814 and spent most of her eighty-one years of her life in this place. She was a member of the Congregational church here. She leaves six children, four of whom live in Orange and North Orange; Mr. Wales Ward in Saratoga, N.Y. and Mrs. Eddy Brooks at Grand Rapids, Michigan. All were present at the funeral as was her brother, Mr. William Mayo and his wife from Leominster." Her obituary in the Orange Enterprise reads, "Mrs. Esther R, widow of the late Thomas Ward, passed away Monday morning, after a long and painful illness. She fell more then four months ago and has been a constant sufferer since. She was born March 10, 1814."
