    Llywelyn negotiated with Pope Innocent II for permission to marry the daughter of Reginald, the king of the Isle of Man. In 1203, it was finally granted, but by then Llwelyn wanted the hand of Joan to strengthen his position.

    Treaty:
    He signed a treaty with King John of England. The treaty required Llywelyn to pay homage to King John and recognize him as overlord of Wales. John offered his illegitimate daughter, Joan's hand in marriage.

    Petition:
    He petitioned to have Joan's son, Dafydd, recognized as his only heir. The petition was quickly granted.

    • General Information: According to the Dictionary of Welsh Biography "Nothing is known of him other than the impression he made on Gerald the Welshman when he was travelling through Ceredigion with Archbishop Baldwin preaching the crusade. Gerald says that he was a tall, handsome young man with fair curly hair, dressed in the style of Welshmen of the period — a shirt and a thin clock and barefooted — but lithe and dignified in appearance. He survived to old age but left no mark on the history of the period."

    History:
    When his father died in 1240, he soon rose in revolt and regained much of what had been lost on his father's death. According to Matthew of Paris "During all this time, the Welsh, swarming from their lurking-places, like bees, spread fire and slaughter, and unceasingly ravaged the countries adjoining their own; the king [sent] three hundred knights...with the necessary money and supplies for the read, to check the insolence of the Welsh." He also says that the king, like a woman, stayed from from the fight in comfort and safety. By 1245, Dafydd was pursued into Northern Wales. When winter came, the English forces withdrew, but the revolt crumbled when Dafydd died.

    He died without issue.
